How to Grow A Vegetable Garden

Growing a vegetable garden seems to be the popular thing to do right now. Being stuck at home
has turned many women into gardeners and it is very rewarding. You don’t even really have to
have a green thumb to be successful. All you need is a plan, your attention and some essential
tips on reaping the best harvest.
The Basics
Growing a vegetable garden means remembering that plants need very basic things. They need
sun, air and water. Good soil is a plus, but even that is optional with the trendiness of
hydroponics. The rest will come with your time and attention if you can make sure you’ve got
good basics in place.
Choosing A Location
The best vegetable garden will be one that gets lots of sunshine and some afternoon shade to
refresh from the day. Before you decide to plant, watch the areas you’re thinking of gardening
and see what kind of light it receives throughout the day. Make sure they’re easily accessible, and
if you’re planning to do raised beds, that you have enough space to do so.
Raised Beds?
A raised bed is one of the easiest ways to start growing a vegetable garden. It’s basically a box
that’s built off the ground and has a barrier to prevent weeds/grass from getting into your garden.
You can buy them or have them constructed rather inexpensively.
You can also do container vegetable gardens, and this is an excellent option if you’re just
gardening for yourself to have some yummy veggies. Some vegetables are great for container
gardens—lettuce, herbs, tomatoes and strawberries! Large and small, many people have full
bounties from basic container gardens.
And of course, there is always planting right in the ground. You’ll probably need to rototill the
soil and get it ready with fertilizer. You may even want to take your soil to your local nursery to
have it tested and see if you need to add anything for the best growth.
Start with Plants or Seeds?
You can start a vegetable garden straight from your local gardening center, but
sometimes when you’re starting a vegetable garden, it’s easier to buy starter plants. They’re
inexpensive and already started seedlings typically fare better for the newer gardener. If you do
use seeds or packets, be sure to follow the directions.
Water
Plan to water regularly. Unless you live somewhere that does get a bit of a rain shower daily
during the growing season, plan to make sure your vegetable garden gets regularly watered.
When you hand water, it’s nice to also pull weeds you may see and check your plants’ status. But,
you can also set up a drip hose on a timer. Just make sure your plants, especially new ones, are
getting regular water.
Pests
They come in all forms. Squirrels, deer, birds, raccoons…you name it, you may have
SOMETHNG that wants to share your salad. Then there are the insects…so have a plan. Your
local gardening store should have something safe to use (insecticidal soaps or even herbal
pesticides). If you need to keep those bigger ‘friends’ out, consider garden fencing.
Fertilize
Fertilizing your plants regularly will keep them healthy and thriving. Use organic fertilizers
because you’re eating these veggies. Just be careful to follow the instructions for fertilizing. If
you use too much fertilizer, you may invite more insects to join the party.
The most important thing to remember about growing a vegetable garden is that your attention to
it will make it thrive. Gardening and getting into the soil and dirt each day is actually therapeutic,
so be sure to reap the benefits of gardening in a harvest for your mind and your mouth!
