How to Grow A Vegetable Garden

How to Grow A Vegetable Garden

Fave Lifestyles

Growing a vegetable garden seems to be the popular thing to do right now. Being stuck at home
has turned many women into gardeners and it is very rewarding. You don’t even really have to
have a green thumb to be successful. All you need is a plan, your attention and some essential
tips on reaping the best harvest.

The Basics

Growing a vegetable garden means remembering that plants need very basic things. They need
sun, air and water. Good soil is a plus, but even that is optional with the trendiness of
hydroponics. The rest will come with your time and attention if you can make sure you’ve got
good basics in place.

Choosing A Location

The best vegetable garden will be one that gets lots of sunshine and some afternoon shade to
refresh from the day. Before you decide to plant, watch the areas you’re thinking of gardening
and see what kind of light it receives throughout the day. Make sure they’re easily accessible, and
if you’re planning to do raised beds, that you have enough space to do so.

Raised Beds?

A raised bed is one of the easiest ways to start growing a vegetable garden. It’s basically a box
that’s built off the ground and has a barrier to prevent weeds/grass from getting into your garden.
You can buy them or have them constructed rather inexpensively.

You can also do container vegetable gardens, and this is an excellent option if you’re just
gardening for yourself to have some yummy veggies. Some vegetables are great for container
gardens—lettuce, herbs, tomatoes and strawberries! Large and small, many people have full
bounties from basic container gardens.

And of course, there is always planting right in the ground. You’ll probably need to rototill the
soil and get it ready with fertilizer. You may even want to take your soil to your local nursery to
have it tested and see if you need to add anything for the best growth.

Start with Plants or Seeds?

You can start a vegetable garden straight from your local gardening center, but
sometimes when you’re starting a vegetable garden, it’s easier to buy starter plants. They’re
inexpensive and already started seedlings typically fare better for the newer gardener. If you do
use seeds or packets, be sure to follow the directions.

Water

Plan to water regularly. Unless you live somewhere that does get a bit of a rain shower daily
during the growing season, plan to make sure your vegetable garden gets regularly watered.
When you hand water, it’s nice to also pull weeds you may see and check your plants’ status. But,
you can also set up a drip hose on a timer. Just make sure your plants, especially new ones, are
getting regular water.

Pests

They come in all forms. Squirrels, deer, birds, raccoons…you name it, you may have
SOMETHNG that wants to share your salad. Then there are the insects…so have a plan. Your
local gardening store should have something safe to use (insecticidal soaps or even herbal
pesticides). If you need to keep those bigger ‘friends’ out, consider garden fencing.

Fertilize

Fertilizing your plants regularly will keep them healthy and thriving. Use organic fertilizers
because you’re eating these veggies. Just be careful to follow the instructions for fertilizing. If
you use too much fertilizer, you may invite more insects to join the party.

The most important thing to remember about growing a vegetable garden is that your attention to
it will make it thrive. Gardening and getting into the soil and dirt each day is actually therapeutic,
so be sure to reap the benefits of gardening in a harvest for your mind and your mouth!

I was becoming an empty nester, a woman of a more interesting age and in transition. Sound familiar? I was at that place where we question our purpose, value, and worth and what in the world are we going to do with the rest of our lives.

I noticed women have a huge hunger to belong to a community of women where they can feel safe, share openly from their heart and have other women to do life with! This is why I created my Fave Lifestyles.

Fave is for the woman who wants to call Fave her community of women who support, uplift, and make her feel better about herself. I want to create a place where we help her answer life's questions and just do life together!

Listening to Your ‘Still Small Voice’

Listening to what is true for you is to listen to the ‘still small voice’ you hear from within you. And
to listen to the ‘still small voice’ that seems to come from outside of you. We are encouraged to
listen to the ‘still small voice’ of the Holy Spirit. Since the Holy Spirit fills every cell of our body,
we would do well to understand that we can listen to our Soul, which is listening to God.

Our Eternal Soul is our Divine connection to Universal God Source. Our Eternal Soul is the part
of us that is Pure, Holy, and Sinless. We have the Light, Love, Power, and Wisdom of God
within us. It is this part of us that shows us answers to the questions we ask. Our Evolving Soul
is the part of us that is transforming into Love with each lifetime. God speaks to our Soul. Our
Soul speaks to God.

How do we know if the ‘still small voice’ we hear in our head is God or only our thoughts? How
do we know if what we hear is true? I have learned to listen to the Voice of Love. If what I hear
sounds like Love, then I know it’s true. Truth is what I hear in my head that rings true in my
heart. I will share a few stories of when I heard God as a child and just a few weeks ago. If we
were sitting across the table from each other, I am sure you would have stories, too.

A Bowl of Cheese

We received a square glass salad bowl set from Great Granny as a wedding gift. Years later,
we were going to a potluck after church. With three small children to care for and volunteering in
children’s ministries most Sundays, I agreed to bring a bowl of grated cheese. When I took the
square bowl out of the cupboard, in my mind, I heard, “You will never see this bowl again.” I
thought, “That’s silly”! I filled the bowl, covered it with plastic wrap, and brought it to the church
refrigerator. After church, as I entered the fellowship hall, a friend regrettably admitted the bowl
slipped from her hands, broke and was thrown away, cheese and all. I began to sense that I
should pay better attention to the ‘still small voice.’

When I Was Nine Years Old

When I was nine years old, I walked to a neighborhood church for Sunday night prayer meeting.
I’m sure my clothes were dirty, and I was probably hungry. On this Sunday night, they were
invited to sing at a church in the next town. I was invited to go along. I knew most of the songs
because I walked to this neighborhood church as often as I could. I felt loved and included. On
that Sunday evening, I wasn’t just going to church; I was helping to lead others. We sang the
words of Psalm 23, and the last line was, “Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the
days, all the days of my life.” I felt the words through my whole body like the words were true
just for me.

Years later, I was going back to North Dakota for a high school reunion. I had a strong sense
that I wanted to say ‘thank you’ to the loving people of that little church. I wrote a letter to my
friend, Ed, who still attended there. Ed said he would need to get the approval of the church
board. Eventually, they said, ‘Yes.’ I invited my mom. The day arrived. I made my way to the
front of the sanctuary. I told them I was a staff pastor to children at a church in Washington
state. I sang the line of that sweet song I remembered from my childhood and said ‘thank you’
for loving me and including me.

The pastor’s wife did not know why I was there and what I was going to say. It so happened she
stood up next to make an appeal for a broader initiative to reach neighborhood children, just like
me many years ago. I am glad I followed the call to say ‘thank you’.

Just a few years ago, I was speaking with a friend who can see things that I cannot yet see. I
told her I have a spirit guide named Simply Love. She agreed and said that Simply Love has
been with me for years. I instantly remembered that Sunday evening singing in the church in the
next town, I felt sure that was the exact moment when God sent a spirit friend to watch over me,
all the days of my life.

Put Your Hand On His Back

The elders of the church were invited to pray for a man with cancer in his back. Before GPS, of
course, I turned the wrong way looking for the house. I entered the living room late, and there
was only one place to sit next to the man who asked us to pray. I was new on staff, and I would
rather have sat across the room. During the prayer time, I heard a ‘still small voice,’ say, “Put
your hand on his back and pray.” I said ‘no’ because I didn’t feel it would be proper. A second
time I heard, “Put your hand on his back and pray.” Again I said, ‘no.’ A third time I heard, “Put
your hand on his back and pray.” Maybe I just wanted to be sure I heard the Voice correctly. I
finally said, ‘Yes, if You say so.’ My hand hovered over his back from below his shoulder blades
to just below his waist. When I felt released from this task, I withdrew my hand. When the prayer
time was over, the man stood up and said, “Mark the calendar, I’ve been healed.” I’m glad I
listened to the ‘still small voice’ that evening. Later, he told me he felt a warm swirl of the Holy
Spirit through his body during the prayer. In just a couple of weeks, I will see him again when I
have the honor of officiating his daughter’s wedding.

Bring Baked Beans (Recipe Included)

We were invited to an evening fellowship picnic in town. I wanted to support this family ministry
event, so I signed us up to go. I was wondering what I should bring to share. I heard, “Baked
beans.” I thought, ‘I’m sure the coordinator had already thought of baked beans.’ Again I heard,
“Baked beans.” I had just enough time to make my Simple Baked Beans recipe (below). I
carried my baked beans to the table, and the coordinator said, “Thank God, I was praying for
baked beans.” I was glad to be an answer to a prayer!

It’s For You

For 14 years, I drove early to church, wishing the roads were filled with Sunday morning traffic.
I’m sure in many communities, this is true. Now I work from home. Recently, I was in my kitchen
happily, making my 3:00 pm cup of coffee. The scene of the Sunday morning traffic came to
mind, and I heard a faint whisper, “It’s for you.” So someday, when I speak to groups of friends,
new and old, perhaps someone will have to wait at a stop sign or a traffic light because of traffic
to the venue. All I know is I believe the ‘still small voice.’

Soul to Soul Conversations

A new friend is considering hiring me to journey with her. She has been through a lot. I asked
God if I am up to the task, and the ‘still small voice,’ said, “Yes, you will speak Soul to Soul.” Her
Soul has everything she needs to know, and your Soul will guide her. We will talk Soul to Soul.
When I told her I trust her Soul to find what is true for her, she said, “No one has trusted her
Soul before.” I am still waiting for her to be ready. I also trust in her Soul’s timing.

From God’s Soul to Yours

Thanks for taking this Soul to Soul journey with me. The Soul of God is Eternal and Infinite, and
so is your Soul. We can all tell stories like these I have shared. Each of us has our unique Soul
stories – times when God spoke to us and through us. Your ‘still small voice’ is speaking to you.
You can make an eternal difference, too.

“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!”

Philippians4:4

At my post-op appointment, my surgeon’s assistant asked about my new knee. I went through a
list of complaints, most based on a theme of achiness and stiffness.

Mark made a few notes and then looked up and said, “Yep, knees are hard.” He proceeded to
check the knee’s alignment and range of motion. At the last bend, he pronounced, “The knee
looks great!”

“So I’ve got to quit whining?”

“Yep, you’ve really got to quit whining.”

Even after surgery, I was looking for reasons to check out: it aches, it’s stiff.

Later that day I saw a Facebook meme that said,

“There’s something in you that the world needs.”

I’ve written two books in which I talk about God placing us where we need to be. Each of us has
a unique and blessed place in this world, doing what only we can do in unique and blessed
relationships at unique and blessed times. Yet I still catch myself looking for the exit, a way out,
a reason not to be. I still get anxious.

God needs us to be who He created us to be. But God doesn’t just throw out the expectations
and hope for an Academy Award winning performance, fearing a box office flop! Paul reminds
us that God is at work in our lives enabling us to shine like stars in the universe (Philippians 2:15b),
not the Hollywood icons, but His beautiful creations shining brightly in the darkest night.

Heavenly Father, we rejoice in this new day
in which to be a shining light in your glorious creation.
Bless us as we become the person You need us to be.
Share with us that peace that surpasses all understanding.
Help us to focus on whatever is true, noble, right and pure, whatever is lovely and admirable,
whatever is excellent and praiseworthy.
To You be the glory! Amen.

Fruit of My Spirit: Reframing Life in God’s Grace was my first publishing endeavor. My second was Signs in Life: Finding Direction in Our Travels with God. Both are collections of stories that tell of God’s love and faithfulness. Both tell of His remarkable grace and mercy.

“Show Your Work” by Austin Kleon

This was the first book I received from my Real Estate friend Natalie Danielson, professional
Directions who is in charge of encouraging and teaching Real Estate Agents in Washington State
You can find her at clockhours.com

“Show Your Work” It is a little book of “10 ways to share your creativity and get discovered”
There are ten chapters in this book with ten intriguing ideas on how to look at our work. It
seems like the book is talking to the artists of the world; however, I believe we all could use a
dose of “Show Your Work” Many of us tend to hide behind our talents, thinking we are not so
significant or that no one is interested in what they do. Cheers, I say, to the confident ones who
are brave on all fronts and expose their works openly. About the book.

I want to think that I am brave, willing to expose the work I do in life. On many days I too need a
dose of the positive encouragement from this little book. I have it close by for a reminder. The
chapter in that little book of inspirations that reached out to me was #5 “Tell Good Stories.”
As a Realtor, I hear many stories about my client’s homes, kids, family, neighborhoods, pets,
and the changes that have happened over time in their home. I love these stories! With 22+
years of experience in my Real Estate career, the stories inspire me to keep going. To keep
going, I like to tell stories that paint pictures of ideas, experiences, and some trials. Telling
stories helps bring perspective to situations. I’m hopeful that my stories are helpful, bring
laughter, and share a community; we are not alone. Often one person’s account is not
dissimilar from another & by telling the stories, it helps move us forward in understanding.
“Keep Going” is another book by Austin Kleon that my friend gave me sometime after the
“Show Your Work.” I guess she thought I needed to express myself more creatively. The new
book is about “10 ways to stay creative in Good times and Bad” Chapter # 4 “Make Gifts”
Years ago I used to make gifts, and loved the gifting. In 1990 I was making kites and gifting them
to my son’s friends. The kids loved the gifts & some adults got excited about some of the bigger
kites. We did many of the local Art & Craft Fairs during our ownership of Bayside Kites.
An excellent friend & I enjoyed those years from 1990 to 1996 growing the business of “Bayside
Kites” In 1995 we decided a change was needed & we sold the company. The new owners are
still selling a vast array of kites, windsocks, banners. Its fun to look back on the stories that we
created around the kite making experience. It was a creative time. It allowed me to stay at
home with my boys. Our families have much fun and loving stories to tell about our experience
making and selling kites together.

Recently I was reflecting on those creative gift-giving times. I felt I had lost those original, fun
creative days and reached out to some people teaching crafts & combining artistic expression
with coaching. In the process of spending time being creative, expressing emotions in art allows
a perspective to life transitions. Karen helped me find that creative expression I had lost.
She took me through some challenging life events. It was interesting how that process helped
& lifted the heaviness off my shoulders. I thank Karen for the creative time we spent together.
I stories I was very attached to have changed or gone away. It was helpful to get unstuck.
I learned we don’t have to make those real-life stories of grief, hurt, disappointment frame you
forever. New stories freed me to feel more creative & feel more accomplished and ready
to share my work. Reach out to Karen if you are feeling stuck in your life stories. Or if you want
more. confidence to “Share Your Work.”

When I spend time with homeowners listening to their stories, I find they too are finding
themselves stuck in a story. The ones I especially find interesting are the stories. Remodel a
home can be a significant expense & a stressful time. Once that remodel was completed, well,
that’s it. No need to make any more changes & clients will tell me with certainty that they just
renovated their house. The home could include addition or kitchen, bathroom, or outdoor
patio. Those are home remodels that pay off most when you come to sell. However, if that
remodel was thirty years ago. Today’s buyers consider that thirty-year-old redo work,
outdated. The story repeats itself across homeowners, especially those that have had one
home for life… Like my Kite story that feels like yesterday, the remodel and changes to homes
feels like yesterday, and homeowners speak of it with pride. For those who have done major
remodels in a home, you know what a life-changing experience it is for the whole family. Having
contractors in your home, picking out paint, cabinets, and floor coverings upset routines causes
emotions to flare up, causing havoc with day to day schedules…

Do you have stories like this? Is there a story you feel stuck telling over & over? Does that story
seem to go with you everywhere? After a few times at Artsy Fartsy events and a few one on
ones with Karen, I wanted to move on to some new material. Transitions, (like moving from a
lifetime home), bring to life many memories, lots of emotions not to mention the work involved
to make it happen. As a Real Estate agent, I believe, these stories need to be heard, listened to,
and explored. Because in knowing the stories, it helps us find solutions. Yes, “Show Your
Work”, gift it to others, and don’t be afraid to move into a new story: a new home, a different
location. Find the creative expression that makes you feel alive and full of Joy! You deserve it!

Cheers

Finding Joy in the Moment

Finding Joy in the Moment

Fave Lifestyles

Learning To Treasure the Moment

Too often I’m not treasuring the moment. It’s easy to look past “now” to what’s next. The writing
assignments that need to be completed, the calls that need to be returned, the plans that need to be
made. At other times, I can find myself worrying about yesterday, words said, words left unsaid, steps
taken, steps not taken. All are important, but sometimes we just need to be and to be in the moment.

Finding Joy in the Moment

Got grandchildren in your life? I’m the grandmother to two delightful 3-year old boys, Enzo and Austin.
One Sunday we were together for dinner and a play date. While swinging in the back yard, we got very,
very loud. Austin was loud! Enzo was loud! Grandma was
very loud!

Later we were playing in the house. At one point we again got very, very loud. Austin was loud! Enzo
was loud! Grandma was very loud! When we learned that Grandpa Kurt was going to be able to stop by,
we hurried to the front porch and jumped up and loud, shouting our loudest.

Finding Joy in the Moment

Being “In the Moment”

I love my time as a grandparent. I’m very aware of my ability to be in the moment with the boys. I don’t
have to think about the bigger challenges and opportunities that come with raising them. I can just be
loud and silly. I can join them in their imagination, climbing aboard our ship, driving our trucks and
trailers, building a fort. Together we get to be.

We’re working our way through serious times, a time of loss, uncertainty, fear and concern, impatience
and misunderstanding. Lives are on the line. We have the challenge and the opportunity to change and
make change, to heal and be healed, to lead and be led. I can’t change yesterday, tomorrow’s not yet
here, but I can stand in this moment.

Celebrating “Carbonated Holiness” in the Moment

When I was with my grandsons that Sunday, I got to laugh my hardest and my loudest. Anne Lamott
calls laughter “carbonated holiness.” Despite all that we’ve been through and all that we’re continuing
to go through, this is the day the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad. Let us find carbonated
holiness in this very moment.

See Deanna’s “Laughter” video at YouTube.
