Find A New Hobby During This Season of Social Distancing

Fave Lifestyles

Has this year left you wishing you had some additional hobbies on your game card? We know…there’s nothing like being told it’s safer for you to be home and to be socially and physically distanced and you’re left wondering what to do with this time.

Even though social distancing isn’t quite new to us, it’s different because we were just coming out of winter in the beginning. With days shortening and winter forcing us to be inside more and more (hard to garden in snow), we’re looking for more creative ways to fill our time.

 What Are You Interests?

While there’s much about this year we’d change, we have to be honest. It’s forced us to take some really introspective looks at how we spend our time, with whom we spend our time and even who we really are.

Psychology experts believe this can be a gift,  and that a winter where we’ll have to really buckle under and stay safe distances from each other can still bring new gifts in the form of winter hobbies. Now may be the time to try skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating or anything the traditional holiday season held but you never had time for. The lack of holiday gatherings means you do have the time, and you might just find you love it.

All you have to do is think about things you may be interested in and give them a shot.

Online Is The New In-Person

No, online classes for hobbies that are traditionally held in-person may not be optimal, but there are a lot of perks. Businesses are really working hard to offer lots of creative scheduling and interesting classes for you to participate in because they’re just as in need of a way to make this social distancing time work as you are. While we agree that together is better, we’re just thankful for any opportunities that we have where we can safely socialize, learn and have fun at the same time.

Women are RAVING about how much fun they’re having with several different online classes they’ve been able to take and the best part? You can do it from literally anywhere in the world–as long as you have an Internet connection, you’re in!

Dancing

Dancing is so much fun, and even better? It’s great exercise too! With online dancing, you join several others from the comfort of your home, and there’s something about that scenario that lets you feel a little less vulnerable than you might in-person! Just think, you may be able to become a Boot Boogie Babe one day! Owner DeAnna Lee’s mission is to empower women by offering safe spaces for all ages, sizes and backgrounds to grow through friendships and dance. Online dancing may not just be a new hobby, but a new way of life!

Fitness Classes

If now’s the time you think you’re ready to get fit, then Fitness with Kelli Fennelly may be just the thing. Just as you can with many online fitness centers, Kelli will help customize a plan that’s just for you–compiled for your goals and your life experience. You’ll be able to work with a schedule that’s convenient for you, and again, in the comfort of your own home but still with personalized care.

If yoga is more your style and you’ve not had the time to give a program a try, here’s your chance! Not only is yoga a great way to stretch and keep yourself limber, but it’s a perfect way for you to help center and destress in such a crazy world. Yoga with Lucy B offers online classes and modifications for all levels of Yogis and the things you’ll need to have in your house are minimal.

Art Classes

Yaymaker classes are HUGE hits across the country because you can literally create masterpieces right in your own home. Because many are on Zoom, you can meet new people and make new friends or sponsor your own parties and connect with friends and family you may be missing.

Golf

Golf is something you can do individually or distanced with friends, and did you know you burn almost 1500 calories with 18 holes? It’s great exercise, mentally challenging and something different. You might just find yourself on the next LPGA circuit!

Horseback Riding

When it comes to new hobbies you can do while also socially distancing, horseback riding is another popular choice. It’s a way to bond and connect with another creature, but in a really unique and special way. Plus, it gets you outside, connecting with nature and being able to find gratitude in simple gifts of fresh air and freedom. Besides, didn’t you always wish you had a pony?

Flyfishing:

Flyfishing is another hobby that may have never crossed your mind but you might find you thoroughly enjoy! It’s easy to maintain social distance, even when fishing with friends. When you’re out there on the water, it’s peaceful and serene and you can let the troubles of the day fade as you focus on pulling in the big one.

Music

Ever wanted to learn to play the guitar or the piano? Talk about having the time to put the practice in! Many music teachers have perfected the art of online lessons and performance and this is a great time to take advantage of it!

Whatever it is you decided to dive into, look at this time to grow and bloom. It’s easy to let the dreariness and bleak of winter overtake us, particularly now, but we are lucky enough to use this time for our good! So let’s do it and come out even more talented than we were before!

Finding Our Purpose

Finding Our Purpose

Fave Lifestyles

What Is Our Purpose?

Some people search for years to find their Purpose. They wonder and even despair if they are fulfilling their Purpose. I hope to shed a little light on their Path. Our Purpose is to move toward our Highest Good and for the Highest Good of Others. The good news is as we move through our Life, God is doing the same, step by step. God is creating our Highest Good with us. God is within us and right alongside us and behind us and before us.

Some of us have limitations that slow down our progress. We judge ourselves and project our self-judgment onto God, assuming God feels the same way about us as we do. The most meaningful question we can ask each other and the question God cares about the most is, ‘How are you today?’

Feeling Love Is Our Purpose

What if our Purpose is as easy as feeling Loved? When we feel Love, it is easy to share Love. When we share Love with each other and the planet, we experience the Love of Universal God Source. Feeling Love is our Purpose.

Does Intention Matter?

One definition of Purpose is intention. Intention is our aim or plan. God uses our intention just as much as God uses our actions. Intention is the first step toward action. With everything going on in our lives, it is okay if intention is the best we can do today.

Is Our Purpose Life-Sustaining?

Wisdom is knowing and trusting the next best step in any area of our lives. Love is automatically Life-Sustaining. We can ask ourselves, “What is the next loving thing to do?”

Focusing on Love helps us say ‘no’ to the people and experiences that do not give us Life.

How Do We Feel About Our Purpose?

We know our Purpose by the way we feel about it. When I focus on my Purpose, I lose track of time, and I am so happily driven toward my work! We are guided to do what fulfills a deep motivation in our Soul.

Can We Let Go of Our Purpose?

We should not feel a sense of lack when we think about our Purpose. Instead, we can feel like the Universe conspires to help us! We also should not wait to feel like we ‘have arrived’ when we fulfill our Purpose. Today is our Purpose. We can have our Purpose all mapped out with goals and timelines, and yet if we are driven beyond our capacity and sense of balance, then our motivation is coming from a place of woundedness and not Purpose.

I have goals of being an author and speaker and bringing emotional and spiritual freedom to the world. I have very specific projects and timelines for carrying out my Global Purpose. I work every day toward these goals for my Highest Good and the Highest Good of Others, but I have also let it go. The reason I can let it go is that it is not all up to me. I cannot carry the burden of my Purpose alone. I am counting on God and my family and friends. I am counting on circumstances to open up to me. God is counting on my intentions and actions, and I’m counting on God’s.

Do We Feel Universal God Source Helping Us?

Do you feel the Universe helping you? Do you know that God is always for you? Do you feel surrounded by Love and Abundance?

I have lived a privileged Life. I grew up poor, but doors did not close in my face, as happens to some. I hope the world would know God is for us! Abundance is Everywhere. Love is our Path.

How To Find What Is Blocking Our Purpose

How do we find our Purpose? It is simple. We close our eyes and ask. We can think of our Life so far, what brings us Joy? We find our Purpose in what brings us Joy.

Reflect, Reframe and Remove

When you stop to think about your Life so far, did issues of regret, disappointment, and blame come to mind? Yeah, me too. The issues that drain Life from us can be easily transformed by reflecting on what hurts us, then reframing the issue with a Higher and more True perspective. When we are armed with a New Story, we can remove that which hurt us.

Own Our Life!

The first step in solving our Life problems is to assume the problem Is something we can solve. We can own the part of us attached to holding on to the difficulties in our Life. Then we can learn to let it go.

Ask for Help!

I have hired six coaches to help me over the last five years! When I face a problem I am not yet able to solve, I ask for help! I trust if you have a problem you cannot solve, you will ask for help, too. I Love You. I hope my Love will make a difference in your Life.

Taking Your Power Back

Taking Your Power Back

Fave Lifestyles

Here at Modern Widows Club we have monthly topics that are focused on our Seven Pillars of a Healthy Widow and Healthy Woman. Regardless of whether you have suffered the loss of your life partner we all have these areas of our lives that are important to our overall well being and health. They are: Emotional/Mental Health, Physical Health, Financial Health, Purpose and Meaning, Spiritual Health, Fun/Creative Health and Relational Health.

Our topic the month of October was “Taking Your Power Back”. I think that could fall under a number of our categories above. When you have had your feet knocked out from underneath you from a significant loss, we can all feel like we are powerless to get back up and find our power. When my husband died suddenly when I was 57, I could not see the future in front of me. My only thought was getting from one day to the next or sometimes from one hour to the next. Then, I thought I would just focus on doing my best at my job, spending time with my grown children and doing my favorite hobby quilting. Well, I did my job to the best of my ability (which certainly lacked), I did spend quite a lot of time with my daughters and I didn’t start quilting for more than 7 years. I’m not sure I really knew what my purpose and passion was prior to becoming a widow and then I really didn’t know what my purpose was.

What I did know was that I desperately wanted the death of my husband to matter. That this catastrophic life event would change me and how I lived my life. That I would take this gift called LIFE and make sure I lived it fully.  I didn’t know how I would do that, but I knew that LIFE is precious and I no longer wanted to just float thru it without purpose and passion. I have a very strong faith system and feel like I was guided all along the way on this journey. And actually, that all of the events in my life had led me to where I am now. I think the message I had then and still have is that the only thing in this life that really matters is LOVE. Loving God and loving people encompass everything that makes life matter. What does that look like?

We had an interesting exercise that helped us determine some specific action verbs that most all of us want in our life. They are: LOVE, JOY, PEACE, PATIENCE, KINDESS, GOODNESS, FAITHFULNESS, GENTLENESS AND SELF CONTROL. We threw in WISDOM. On a piece of paper, we listed all of these attributes/verbs in one column.  In the second column we listed who in our lives most represented these attributes. In the third column we listed who in our lives least represented these attributes. You could have the same person in multiple categories.   If you have a long list of people in the MOST category than you are fortunate. If you have a long list of people in the LEAST category than perhaps you need to access your relationship with them. Now that doesn’t mean you kick them to the curb but perhaps move them to the outer circle. What and who do we want to have as emotional influencers in our lives.  An exercise like this can assist us in recognizing places in our lives where we need to make some changes. We also added an additional exercise.  If you could take all of your life experience and knowledge that you have gleaned over all your years, what would you tell that little girl who you were way back when? This is quite a cathartic challenge. For me, as a little girl growing up, I was so filled with fear at EVERYTHING in life that I never felt I had any power. Writing to my little self, made me so aware of what I would/do want for her.  I’m grateful for all the life experiences to this point because they make me who I am today. But I so wonder who I would be today if I had known I didn’t have to be so afraid.

I encourage you to take a little bit of time to do these exercises and see where you might need to take your power back.  Our Modern Widows Club website has a huge bank of blogs on the Seven Pillars of a Healthy Widow, Healthy Woman.  https://modernwidowsclub.com/blog/

Why Start A Business in Your 50’s?

Why Start A Business in Your 50’s?

Fave Lifestyles

Finding your style in your mid-50s is fabulous! You have the time (and desire) to put yourself first for a change, and you’ve had your whole life to figure out who you are. You exude confidence that only experience and grace can offer.

Wear Your Favorite Colors

When you’re finding your style in your mid-50s, you know what colors look great on you and what colors don’t. And here’s a tip…even if gray looks great on you (and it does for many of us), don’t be afraid to pair it with bright and bold colors that make your skin tone pop. Embrace color for what it is–pops that highlight and frame your best features. Now’s the time for you to make sure that signature lipstick really becomes signature, and it’s a wonderful time to really go for colors you’ve always loved–your confidence alone makes them shine.

Splurge A Little

Odds are, your closet is full of materials that may have been cost-effective or necessary when purchasing, but not the comfiest or the ones you’d choose right now. It’s okay, we’ve all been there. Finding your style in your mid-50s is all about taking care of yourself. Choose high-quality cottons (with some stretch for just the right tailored fit) and premium knits and cashmere or silk. In your 50s, it’s all about signature style, and choosing things that make you feel amazing!

Focus on Fit

We can’t emphasize this enough. Fit is everything, particularly in your 50s. There’s a fine line between something looking sleek and sophisticated and something looking sloppy,  you want to make sure you don’t cross that line. This is the time to find a great tailor and make sure that what you wear fits your body beautifully. A little structure in your clothing goes a long way in highlighting your best assets, and at this point in life, baggy and loose-fitting just is not flattering.

On that note, just because you’re in your mid-50s, you shouldn’t be afraid to play your waistline up. If you don’t love your middle, you’re not alone, but you can choose styles that can help. If you wear tops that are just a tad shorter, they’ll sit right between your waist and the top of your hip. This will help give a slim silhouette that will show off your curves. You can also choose a higher rise pair of trousers that will lengthen your middle and give you a slimmer look. Consider boat neck collars too. They elongate your neck and give you that graceful confidence people turn their heads at every time you pass.

Must-Haves

Style in your 50s is all about finding your signature look and having a few must-have pieces can help. Remember that it’s not always about the clothing article itself, but color and accessories too. When it comes to color, take charge of red! There are different reds, so make sure you find the one that’s best with your skin tone but find yourself some power red and flaunt it!

The same goes for jewelry. This is the decade to show off! Either pull something out of your jewelry box (or buy a treat for yourself) and begin wearing some statement pieces just because you can. Splurge on the shoes and the handbags as well.  Especially because comfort is key when it comes to your feet, find something that doesn’t just look fabulous but feels good too. Choose classic handbags that also fit your style, and don’t get stuck in the rut of just using the same one every day. Have a handful you love and rotate them through.

Most importantly, buy a few pieces that are your go-to pieces. A flattering dress that fits you perfectly and makes you feel magical when you’re wearing it. A pair of pants that show all the right curves and let you breathe at the same time. A sweater that’s not only comfy and cozy but able to be dressed up or down as the occasion presents. Having a few go-to pieces in your closet means you never dread an invitation anywhere!

You’re in an incredible decade in your life, and your style should show it. Whatever you decide makes you happy, let it guide you in your style search. Remember the most stylish thing you can wear is your own happy smile, fueled by a joy-filled heart, so nourish that and you’ll always shine.

The Samurai’s Courage

The Samurai’s Courage

Fave Lifestyles

When I was nine, Bob Willis tripped me, punched me in the stomach, and said, “You’re a fat, ugly Jap!” After that, I wanted nothing to do with my heritage

However, throughout my life, seeds of Japanese influence were planted.  When I attended college, I studied Japanese to fulfill the foreign language requirement.  I wanted to know what my parents were saying that I couldn’t understand!  My first mentor encouraged me to visit Japan because I was ‘more Japanese than I realized.’

Then, in 1982, my husband and I went to Japan and met my rich cousins on my father’s side of the family. They gave me copies of my Tsugawa family tree, and crest which had images of three swords and three leaves that looked like hearts….Domo arigatou gozaimasu …..Thank you very much.

A few days later we attended the Jidai Matsuri in Kyoto; the annual historical parade with over 2,000 people dressed in period attire. For me, the highlight was the female samurai warrior, Tomoe Gozen. I didn’t even know there were female samurai! She was so strong, regal, and her image left a deep impression on me.  We returned home, and I packed away our memories and my Japanese heritage.

Then in 2007, I was rear ended; the second time in 18 months. I was so messed up, I couldn’t think straight!!! I easily fatigued, suffered chronic pain, and was reading at a seventh grade level; diagnosed with traumatic brain injury (TBI). My new job was physical therapy, massage therapy, vision therapy, speech pathology, chiropractor, neurologist, physiatrist, psychologist, Neuro psych, brain scan, MRI, and more. In fact, I endured over 1,000 medical appointments to regain wellness.

The Samurai’s Courage
*paid advertising

But I started to think about that female samurai warrior and my Japanese heritage. I began to research the code of bushido, the way of the warrior, whose principles are: courage…integrity… benevolence… respect…honesty… honor…and loyalty.  While researching, I saw a familiar image…I raced to show my husband, “LOOK, my family crest is one of the five main samurai crests of feudal Japan!  The DNA of those samurai warriors is in me.” I knew if the samurai spirit can motivate those warriors, it can motivate me!

My goal was to write a book about how the samurai principles influenced Japanese descendants to overcome challenges. I thought if I can write the book, then I will overcome traumatic brain injury (TBI). Every day, with whatever strength I had, I began to write. As the book took shape, my vision, speech and mental capacity all improved. I could think more clearly and began to see light at the end of the tunnel. When the first shipment of books arrived, I thought, YES, that warrior spirit really is a part of me!

What about your visions, talents, and dreams?  I believe those dreams are on your heart, and only YOU can accomplish them!  I encourage you to act upon your visions and talents, whether past or present, and fulfill your destiny!  Ignite the ‘fire in your belly’ to propel you forward.

“If not now, when? If not you, who?”

   ― Hillel the Elder

Now I share the code of bushido with people up and down the west coast and how the samurai code of ethics can be an anchor in a sea of turmoil, and a guide through the maze of life. It took courage to endure thousands of medical appointments to overcome TBI. Had I given up, I would not have written my book, nor would I be able to share this story with you!

I challenge you to pursue your dreams…and never give up.  Live each day as if it were your last, because one day it will be. Remember this code of bushido, for it can be the key that unlocks your greatness!

NOW, sharpen your swords and let the journey begin!
