One of the biggest reasons why diets fail is because of emotional or “stress” eating. Taking a moment to
become aware of how you feel about losing weight and how you feel about life in general and knowing
what to do about it can make the difference in your success. Do you feel excited and confident or
doubtful and overwhelmed at the thought of losing weight? Feeling confident and excited about any
goal creates momentum and energy helping you move toward your goal with ease. Anything less will
create doubt and drudgery which can derail even the toughest resolve. In addition, the stress that
comes from feeling less than thrilled about losing weight or any other area of life can trigger cortisol to
be released in the body. Cortisol is the hormone responsible for creating stubborn belly fat. If that
weren’t bad enough stress also constricts energy, circulation and slows metabolism. Heavy emotions
weigh us down in terms of weight and health issues. Lighter emotions foster wellbeing. The question
is…where are you holding heavy emotions?

There are three key areas to look at that tend to build up heavy emotions. Knowing how you feel in the
following areas will give insight of where to do inner work that will set you up for success:

1. Assess the main areas of life Health, Finances, Relationships, Work. Decide on a scale of 1 – 10
how much stress you are holding in each of the areas currently. Write down your answer. If you
are experiencing a level of 5 or above in any area it will be important to find a way to relax
about it. Meditation and/or prayer are powerful ways to create emotional ease in difficult areas
of life. Also, you can refer to my previous article to learn a simple way to relax.

2. Past Disappointments. If you have been struggling with weight for years and have a history of
failing to reach your goal there can be some emotion around that fact. Tune into how you feel
about any past failures. Take a moment and decide on a scale of 1-10 how much does it bother
you that you are not at your ideal weight already? If this is higher than 5 it can create a
significant source of stress and in addition it may erode your self-confidence. Remember if you
think you can or if you think you can’t – its true. Refer to my previous article and follow simple
steps for creating a winning mindset to set yourself up for success. Virtual Weight Loss – You
Are What You Think?

3. Grief and loss. There can be a level of grief associated with the mere thought of having to live
without your favorite comfort foods. The thought of eliminating a comfort food can feel like
losing a best beloved friend, one who is always there for you. It’s important to take a moment
to acknowledge this very real emotion. You may also feel a loss of freedom at the thought of
changing your diet. Freedom…to eat what you want and when you want to. Think what else you
may be afraid of losing and write them down. Be as honest as possible. Side note: unresolved
grief in other areas of life such as divorce, loss of a job, financial uncertainty can cause
emotional eating as well. Tending to these losses will increase your success.

Knowing where you are holding heavy emotions in each of these areas and then being able to lighten up
about them will actually help you “lighten up” physically. I have shared a powerful way to help access a
relaxed mindset in my previous article about increasing energy.

Our “virtual” emotions have very real and physical implications that that can help or hinder weightloss
goals. Finding a way to lighten up about life and the process of attaining your ideal weight, health or
fitness goals is the important work to do first.
