Virtual Weightloss – You Are What You Think?

When you think about weightloss the first thing that comes to mind is probably “Which diet will be best
for me and my situation”? That was always the first question I had. And it can get confusing from there
because of all the choices…Keto, South Beach, Protein, Alkaline Diet and so many more. Whether your
desire to lose weight stems from wanting to create a personal makeover, or because you are following
doctors orders for improved health or are looking to increase energy and self-esteem there are a few
keys to insure your REAL success by attending to your “virtual” success first.

You may be thinking….”I don’t want “virtual” success – I want REAL success”. The foundational key is to
realize that accomplishments of any kind begin virtually in the mind first. Any invention EVER created by
a human being began first as a thought in the mind of the inventor. No exceptions! The clothes you
wear, the electronic device you are reading this article on, even airplanes were first a virtual thought in
the mind of the inventor. This includes your goal to lose weight. Even the meal you eat begins with a
thought “I’m hungry” which motivates you to get off your couch and open the fridge. You scan all the
options until something makes your mouth water. You even taste your food virtually before you eat it!
Thoughts have creative energy behind them.

Before deciding what to feed your body to help you shed pounds or create health you must FIRST know
what thoughts to feed your mind.

Here are three ways to use thoughts to propel you toward success.

  1. Create a thought that excites you. Anticipation of something good is what gets you off the
couch. It is the same for making a change to your physical body such as getting in shape or losing
a few pounds. Use your imagination to “see” in your mind’s eye a virtual picture of an outcome
that excites you. Here is a good way to get into the flow of imagination. Just say “If I could snap
my fingers and have whatever I wanted – how would I like it to be?”. It encourages your
creativity which is where all success begins.
  2. Write it down. The act of writing your goals down sends a strong message to your brain that you
mean business. Otherwise it is just a passing wish.
  3. Know what your Inner Critic is saying. If you are like me or most people I work with, as soon as I
think about setting a goal, especially for losing weight or creating health I am faced with internal
doubt and pushback. I call it the Inner Critic. You might hear an internal voice say “If it were
possible you would have done it by now” or “You have failed before so why bother?” It’s
important to know how your Inner Critic is weighing in about your goal to lose weight because it
is housed in the subconscious mind which is contains the default beliefs that fuel all decisions
nonstop 90% of the time. It keeps track of all the painful losses of the past to protect you from
being hurt again and this can work against your best efforts. For example, in an article I
previously wrote I mentioned a woman who kept getting injured just enough to keep her from
working out consistently. This went on for years until she discovered she had grown up with
sisters that were threatened by her beauty. She learned to become a shrinking violet to protect
herself from being hurt. When she discovered that her injuries were initiated by an old belief
perpetuated by her Inner Critic she was able to see playing small to protect herself was no
longer relevant. After working together to she was able to replace her limiting and outdated
belief with a supportive healthier one she was able to move forward with confidence and no
longer became injured. Even though belief systems are “virtual” they can keep us from physically
moving forward toward our dreams and goals. Know if your beliefs are supporting your forward motion.

Healing painful losses from the past helps to heal the Inner Critic and create an Inner Cheerleader. Once
you discover your Inner Cheerleader previously insurmountable obstacles seem doable.

I’ll share step one of a three step process that I teach my clients to help them find their own limiting
beliefs. Ask and answer this question; “The reason I am not already experiencing the amazing health and
weight I want right now is because….” I suggest repeating that questions ten times and search deeply for
different answers. Write them down. Don’t give it too much thought just write what comes to mind with
no judgment. You know you are done when you begin repeating yourself. The list of answers that you
come up with reveal your limiting beliefs.

If you are experiencing frustration in an area of life such as losing weight and nothing is working to your
satisfaction chances are you have experienced a loss, disappointment or hurt on some level. Take a
moment to do your virtual homework so you can experience REAL success.
